I Did It, I spent 4 Grand for a HD camcorder

This past Thursday I bought a Canon XH-A1. The best present I could give myself for the next 5 Christmas's and Birthdays! I did this mainly because I'll be traveling to New Zealand to study abroad next semester. I love to film and will be posting videos of my experiences in New Zealand on youtube, granted I have the access to a nice editing system and computer. I think this purchase and what I plan to do with this camera brings to mind the grassroots idea from Jenkins. How me, the consumer, can now become a producer and make spoof videos of Star Wars or whatever I feel like. It's interesting to think that Jenkins actually thought this whole idea of spoof making through. I've done spoofs on the Matrix, a cooking show learning how to make PB&J, and the Squirrel Hunters (a spoof on Mr. Irwin's show). I won't be able to make a film without thinking about how Jenkins put a "producer" label on me. It's kind of a cool thought- THANKS CONVERGENCE CULTURE!

HD camcorder

I know I talked about this earlier today, but there's good reason I bring HD camcorders up again. Since I was accepted to study a broad in New Zealand (not sure what her name is yet). I decided that in order to capture the true awesomeness of New Zealand, I would need an expensive camera with a lot of features. (I also plan to go into filming when done with school, so there is another good justification) So my project that I'm doing also provides me with the opportunity to research which camera I'd prefer. (Canon XH-A1) Unfortunately for me, I often find myself looking more at what I want to buy rather than research for my project... This is obviously a habit I'll need to change. I'm looking forward to traveling, and if the opportunity comes, I'll be posting video shorts on youtube of my experiences in NZ.

New Zealand will be a radical place to use this camera and it's underwater housing from Equinox, (another load of money) but it'll be worth every penny.

The previous post is an example of footage I would like to film one day. It was done by Terry Maas, a professional freediver/spearfisher (no O2 tanks, just holding your breath) I also freedive and spearfish and hope to use that skill to land a sweet job traveling, filming, and going underwater to film fish, sharks, and other creatures of the deep.
